The Town of Indian Head

Basic garbage service includes bi-weekly pick-up and landfill services for residents of Indian Head.


Residents of Indian Head also demonstrate their care for our environment with their ongoing participation in the Emterra Recycling initiative. Many residents also partake in personal green practices such as composting that benefit us all through reductions in the amount and cost of waste management.

Curbside Garbage & Recycling Collection Information

Residential curbside garbage and recycling collection is done by Loraas Disposal. Household garbage will be picked up every two weeks on Mondays. Recycling will be pickuped up every four weeks on Tuesdays. 

On collection days, please remember to have your cart out by 7:00 a.m. After your garbage or recycling has been collected, remove your carts off the street and back to your property. Commercial customers who have a roll-out garbage cart also follow the residential curbside garbage schedule.

Setting out your cart

Place your garbage or recycling by the street you normally use (unless you have received other instructions) on your assigned collection day, by 7:00 am. Acceptable Materials

Please note that some materials, like paint, chemicals and other hazardous materials should not be placed inside your garbage bin. Banned materials will not be collected. For accepted recycling materials please see the Loraas Curbside Recycling Pamphlet. If you consistently have more than what will fit in your cart you now have the option to rent a second cart. Please call the Town Office to make those arrangements.

Town Waste Transfer Station Access

The conversion of the Town of Indian Head's landfill to a Waste Transfer Station is now complete. The Town's Waste Transfer Station operates on a punch-card card system. Waste Transfer Station cards are available from the Town Office, 421 Grand Avenue. The Waste Transfer Station is located 3 kilometers west of Indian Head on the grid road adjacent to the north entrance of Grand Avenue. Please make sure to tarp and tie all garbage, trees, leaves, etc. that you may be taking out to the Waste Transfer Station so as not to litter our countryside. The Town Waste Transfer Station is open to the Town of Indian Head and R.M of Indian Head residents during the following hours, weather permitting.

Spring and summer hours for the transfer station effective April 1st - October 31st, weather and road conditions dependent, are:

Monday 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Tuesday 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Friday 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Winter hours for the transfer station, effective November 1st - March 31st, weather and road conditions dependent, are:

Wednesday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Saturday 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The landfill is closed when the temperature is below -20 C.

Reusing & Recycling in Indian Head

The Indian Head Recycling Centre located beside the Town Shop on Water Street provides 24-hour access for dropping off paper and cardboard.

High-grade, office, and glossy paper, newsprint and cardboard (corrugated and box-board) are accepted in the designated commercial Emterra bins. Please flatten all cardboard and boxboard. Paper should be placed in the bin loose, with the exception of shredded paper, which should be bagged.

The Town accepts appliances for scrap in the designated landfill area. Contact the Town office for more information.

Cell Phones and Rechargeable Batteries

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation accepts all types of cell phone and old rechargeable batteries for recycling. Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead (Pb). Please visit the website for collection sites.

Restrictions: The Corporation will not accept Sealed Lead (Pb) batteries weighing more than 2 lbs.

Beverage Containers

SARCAN Recycling collects and recycles all non-refillable, ready-to-serve beverage containers, excluding milk containers, for deposit refund. This includes metal, plastic, and glass packaging and juice boxes . For refund levels and tips on how to prepare your containers for recycling visit the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council website.

SARCAN also accepts (at no charge) specific end-of-life electronics, such as:

• vehicle audio and video systems

• home audio playback/recording systems

• desktop printers and fax machines

• portable and desktop computers

• home theatre in a box

• personal and portable playback/recording systems

• display devices (televisions and monitors)

• non-cellular telephones and answering machines

• computer peripherals

Composting / Yard Waste

The Town accepts leaves and grass clippings for composting at the Town Landfill. Please note that leaves and clippings must not be in bags, and that branches and kitchen scraps are not accepted for composting.

Engine Oil / Filters / Containers

The Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corporation accepts used oil and filters in limited amounts for recycling, at the Town Works Shop. For larger quantities call SARRC's toll-free number for pick-up service.

Household Hazardous Waste

Clean Farms Canada 1 accepts all sizes of pesticide containers for reuse or recycling. Please triple-rinse containers before dropping them off.
